Yoga during Pregnancy: A Gentle and Safe Practice for Moms-to-Be
Kellie Bischof | APR 4, 2023
12 years ago when I was pregnant with my third daughter, I was advised to not continue doing Yoga. My doctor felt that it might present risks to my pregnancy and thought I’d be safest pausing my practice and picking back up with it after the baby was born, which I did.

In hindsight I believe it was unnecessary to completely avoid Yoga in my pregnancy, and that I missed out on some potential benefits. I wouldn’t advise anyone to go against the advice of their doctors, but I do believe the attitudes surrounding Yoga are changing in the medical world. As our available body of knowledge on the topic grows, Yoga is being suggested by medical professionals more often, even to expecting Moms.

Yoga is a gentle and safe practice that can help moms-to-be to stay fit, calm, and centered during this transformative time. In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of yoga during pregnancy, the precautions you should take, and some useful tips for a successful practice.
Yoga offers many benefits for pregnant women, both for their physical and mental health. Here are some of the most important ones:
- Relieve pregnancy-related pain: Yoga poses can help to alleviate common discomforts such as back pain, hip pain, sciatica, and leg cramps. Gentle stretches, twists, and supported poses can release tension in sore muscles and improve circulation.
- Boost energy and stamina: Prenatal yoga can help you to maintain your energy levels and reduce fatigue. Breathing exercises and gentle movements can increase your oxygen intake and boost your metabolic rate.
- Reduce stress and anxiety: Pregnancy can be a stressful time, but yoga can help you to relax and unwind. Meditation, deep breathing, and restorative poses can calm your mind and promote a sense of peace and serenity.
- Prepare for labor and delivery: Yoga can help you to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, improve your endurance and flexibility, and learn relaxation techniques that can be useful during labor.

While yoga is generally safe for pregnant women, there are some precautions you should take to ensure a healthy and safe practice. Here are the most important ones:
- Consult with your healthcare provider: Before starting a yoga practice, make sure to talk to your doctor or midwife to get clearance and advice.
- Choose a qualified instructor: Look for a yoga teacher who is experienced in teaching prenatal yoga and has knowledge of the changes in a woman's body during pregnancy.
- Follow safety guidelines: Avoid poses that put pressure on your belly, such as deep twists and abdominal contractions. Use props such as blankets, blocks, and straps to modify poses and avoid overstretching.
- Listen to your body: Always listen to your body and do what feels good for you. Don't push yourself beyond your limits, and take breaks whenever you need to.

Here are some useful tips to help you get the most out of your prenatal yoga practice:
- Start slowly and gradually: If you're new to yoga, start with gentle and restorative poses and gradually build up your practice. Pace yourself and don't try to do too much too soon.
- Wear comfortable clothes: Choose loose and breathable clothes that allow you to move freely and comfortably.
- Bring props and accessories: Props such as cushions, blankets, and blocks can help you to adapt poses to your changing body and enhance your practice.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your yoga practice to stay hydrated and energized.
- Practice regularly: The benefits of yoga come from consistent and regular practice. Aim for at least 2-3 sessions a week, and try to incorporate some of the poses and techniques into your daily routine.
Yoga can be a wonderful way for pregnant women to stay healthy, relaxed, and connected to their bodies and their babies. By following the precautions and tips outlined in this blog post, you can enjoy a safe and rewarding practice that enhances your wellbeing and prepares you for the journey ahead. So roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and enjoy the blissful benefits of yoga during pregnancy.
